Handmade Wholesale Soap Marketing

Handmade soap makers face the constant problem of where and how to market their soap. Most start at craft fairs where success is not always assured. Picking the right fair has more to do with your success than all other factors. The way to find out what fairs are the best is to ask other venders and crafters. Don't ask other soap makers, ask other non-competetive vendors. Make the conversation casual. "I had a really lousy show at ...show, what were your two best shows last year" for instance

Once you have decided on which fairs to participate, you must get your application in early as getting asssigned a good location often depends on when your appplication is recieved. If paying $10.00 more per booth gets you a significantly better position do it. The size of the booth is less important than where in the event you are placed. Being on the main walk-way in any event will always help.

Once you are in the event the next most important tactic is the setting up of your booth. I have found the single most important fact is to have some interactive item at your booth. This creates a buzz around your booth as potential customers stop just to see what all of the commotion is about. I would always have some bath salts in tubs that customers would fill them selves. This would get then to stop, smell and look at the other items. Have some items at every price point as you never know who is going to like products and what they will need. At least two very highly priced items, such as gift baskets should be available as well as as a range of dollars items. This way you have a chance for giving every customer a chance to buy. If you have large slabs or logs of soap, put these out as it always gets people stopping and talking about your soap.

The more unusual the item the more likely customers will stop to ask you questions about your product. Many potential customers are aware of the true benefits of handmade soap. Keep some flyers handy touting these benefits. Also put additional contact information on your flyer. The main point is to get the info out there. Flyers are generally throw away items for 95% of the public so don't go overboard with these. Use half sheets of paper and do the printing yourself. A coupon to entice customers to go your website for additional purchases will help build a loyal following of your products.
