Sugar Scrubs are a fantastic way refresh your skin. They are increasing in popularity and come in a variety of forms. At most stores, you can find brown and white sugar scrubs. These can come in different grain sizes but no matter the size they are generally seen as much gentler than their salt scrub counterparts.

The composition of a sugar scrub can be as simple as two ingredients, sugar, and oil. This is the perfect starter recipe for anyone looking to make their own sugar scrub. No need to pay out the nose at the store when you can easily make these from your kitchen!

Start with 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup oil (coconut oil and olive oil are top choices but really any oil you're comfortable putting on your skin). Mix it up and ad a 1/2 a teaspoon of fragrance or essential oil. Seal it up tight when not in use and that's it! Try and keep excess water out of the container to increase the shelf life. No preservative should be needed either if you don't let large amounts of water sit in your container. Best bet is to have a spoon and scoop out what you need for that shower.

One scoop should be enough for a single bath or shower but use as much as you like! I have noticed it works best if you save the sugar scrub for the last part of your shower. Don't wash yourself with soap after you've applied the sugar scrub because you'll rinse off a lot of the oil and fragrance. Just a nice rinse to get rid of the sugar grains and your skin should be exfoliated and soft all day!

Next time you're out shopping check the ingredients label on a few sugar scrubs and see what you find. If making one is a bit too much for you there are tons of different types available. If ever in doubt, go with the one that has the least amount of ingredients because we know you can make them with as little as two!

There are plenty of more complex recipes as well. What we have been talking about so far is an oil based sugar scrub. Another type of sugar scrub is one that has a lotion base. This means the sugar was added after the oils have bonded with water in the lotion making process. Because it's lotion based, these types of scrubs must have preservative as part of the ingredients. They also must have water, some type of oil, and a binding agent, (or emulsifier), for the water and oil.

Another common item you might see are carbomers (like sodium carbomer), which help in the emulsion process and the viscosity of the lotion/sugar scrub. These are widely used in many different types of cosmetics so don't freak out if you start seeing it everywhere.
